Compare Business Gas Prices Across the UK

Gas is often a business's second-biggest utility cost — and one of the easiest to cut. We compare business gas prices from major UK suppliers and secure a rate matched to your usage. Free, no obligation.

How commercial gas pricing works in the UK

Business gas is sold the same way as business electricity: a bespoke contract priced for you, not a capped tariff. Your supplier looks at your annual quantity (AQ) — how much gas you burn in a year — alongside your meter type, payment history and the length of deal you want. Wholesale gas prices move daily, so timing your purchase matters as much as the supplier you pick.

Every bill has the same building blocks: a unit rate per kWh, a daily standing charge, and the Climate Change Levy. Let a contract lapse and you can land on out-of-contract rates that dwarf anything you would have negotiated. The fix is simple — compare before your renewal window closes.

Unit rate (p/kWh)

The price per unit of gas consumed. The single biggest lever on your annual bill.

Standing charge

A fixed daily charge for your gas connection, paid whether you use gas or not.

Annual quantity (AQ)

Your yearly usage in kWh. Accurate AQ figures get you sharper, like-for-like quotes.

Contract term

One to five year fixed deals are standard. Longer terms can lock in lower rates.

Fixed vs flexible: which gas contract suits you?

Most UK businesses choose a fixed-rate gas contract: one unit rate, set for the whole term, no surprises. It is the right call for anyone who values predictable overheads — shops, offices, hospitality, workshops.

Flexible contracts, where you buy gas in tranches as wholesale prices move, can work for very large users with someone watching the market daily. For everyone else, the administrative burden outweighs the gamble. We will tell you honestly which camp you fall into, then source the best fixed deal if that is the answer.

Business gas FAQs

How are commercial gas prices calculated in the UK?
Business gas is quoted as a unit rate per kWh plus a daily standing charge. Suppliers price each contract individually based on your annual quantity (AQ), meter type, credit profile and contract length, so identical businesses can pay different rates.
What is an MPRN and where do I find it?
The MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) is the unique identifier for your gas supply point, printed on your bill. It allows suppliers to retrieve your exact consumption history so quotes reflect real usage, not estimates.
Should I choose a fixed or flexible business gas contract?
Fixed contracts lock your unit rate for 1 to 5 years, giving budget certainty. Flexible contracts track wholesale prices and suit larger users who can tolerate movement. For most small and medium businesses, a fixed rate is the safer choice.
What happens if my business gas contract expires?
You can be moved onto out-of-contract or deemed rates, which are usually much higher than negotiated deals. Starting your renewal 3 to 6 months early avoids this expensive default.
Can I switch business gas supplier mid-contract?
Usually only at renewal, unless your contract has a termination window. Check your notice period — many contracts require notice 30 to 90 days before the end date, or they auto-renew.
