Card Machine Rates UK: What a Fair Deal Looks Like in 2026
Card machine pricing is deliberately confusing — blended rates, interchange-plus, rental terms and a thicket of fees. Here is how to read a deal and spot a fair one. More practical guides in our business energy blog.
The three costs in every card machine deal
Every card machine quote is built from the same three blocks: the transaction rate (a percentage of each sale), the terminal cost (rental or purchase), and the fees (monthly minimums, compliance charges and the assorted extras). Providers compete hardest on the headline transaction rate — and make their margin on the other two.
A fair deal in 2026 is a transparent one. You should be able to see exactly what each sale costs you, what the terminal costs per month, and what happens if you want to leave. If a quote needs a decoder ring, that tells you plenty. When we review card machine rates for clients, we annualise everything into one comparable monthly figure.
Transaction rate
The percentage taken on each card sale. Blended rates are simplest; make sure premium and commercial cards are not excluded from the headline figure.
Terminal cost
Monthly rental or an upfront purchase. Rental looks cheap until you multiply it across a four-year term.
Monthly fees
Minimum service charges, PCI compliance fees and authorisation charges. Small individually — meaningful together.
Contract term
Twelve to forty-eight months is typical. Long terms lock in the rate but also lock in the provider.
Contract traps to check before you sign
The most expensive line in many card machine contracts is not a rate at all — it is the exit clause. Early termination fees, automatic renewals and long notice periods can keep a business paying for a terminal it no longer wants. Always read the termination section before the pricing section.
Also watch for price-rise clauses that let the provider increase rates mid-term, and for quotes that exclude common card types from the advertised rate. A genuinely competitive offer survives scrutiny; a padded one relies on you not looking.
Finally, think about how you actually trade. A busy café with hundreds of small contactless payments has very different needs from a wholesaler taking a handful of large invoices by phone. The right deal is priced around your real transaction mix — not a generic profile. That is exactly what a proper comparison checks before recommending anything.
Annualise the total cost
Transaction rate on your real turnover, plus terminal rental, plus every monthly fee. One number, comparable across quotes.
Read the exit terms first
Notice period, termination fees, auto-renewal. Know the cost of leaving before you consider joining.
