Business Gas Prices UK: Fixed vs Flexible Contracts Explained
Fixed or flexible — which business gas contract actually suits your firm? Here is how UK business gas prices work and how to choose the right deal. More guides in our business energy blog.
How business gas prices are built
Like electricity, business gas has no price cap in the UK. Your supplier quotes a unit rate per kWh and a daily standing charge, priced around your annual consumption, your region and the wholesale market at the moment you buy. Gas is strongly seasonal — winter demand pushes wholesale prices up — so the time of year you contract matters even more than with electricity.
Your bill also carries the Climate Change Levy on each unit and your MPRN identifies the supply point. When a fixed term ends without a renewal, deemed or out-of-contract rates can apply — and for gas, those can be punishing. If you are comparing business gas prices, start from your current unit rate, standing charge and contract end date.
Fixed contracts
One unit rate and standing charge locked for the whole term. Predictable bills, zero market watching — the right choice for most SMEs.
Flexible contracts
You buy gas in tranches at market prices over the term. Can beat fixed deals, but needs active management and suits larger users.
Deemed rates
The expensive default when a contract lapses. Never a strategy — always a sign to act quickly.
Dual fuel
Gas and electricity with one supplier. Comparing both together often unlocks a better overall deal.
Which contract suits your business?
For most small and medium businesses, a fixed contract is the sensible default. It gives you budget certainty for one to three years, it is simple to compare, and it protects you from winter price spikes. The trade-off is that you cannot benefit if wholesale prices fall — but for firms without an energy manager, predictability usually wins.
Flexible purchasing suits larger consumers with someone watching the market — or a broker doing it for them. By buying in tranches, you average out price movements instead of betting everything on a single day. It demands attention and a clear risk policy, which is why we only recommend it where the usage justifies the effort.
Check your usage pattern
Heating-heavy winter users feel price swings most. Steady year-round users have more options.
Decide what matters: certainty or opportunity
Need fixed budgets? Go fixed. Have appetite — and volume — for market timing? Consider flexible.
Compare on total cost, not just unit rate
Standing charges and contract length change the maths. Annualise everything before deciding.
